Ekati Jay Project Technical Session

The Technical Sessions for the Ekati Jay Project will be held on October 4 - 6, 2016 at the Behchokǫ̀ Culture Centre. The sessions will start at 1:00 pm on the 4th, and 8:30 am on the 5th and 6th. A community dinner and information session on the WLWB process will be held at 5:00 pm on October 5th.

Municipal Water Licence Compliance: Letter to the Ministers

The Boards are responsible for issuing water licences to community governments as required by the Waters Act. However, the responsibility of ensuring and monitoring compliance is shared with the various departments of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). In May 2016, the Boards requested collaboration with the GNWT to improve water licence (WL) compliancy and the effectiveness of the current licencing process. 

Pan-Territorial Assessment and Regulatory Boards Forum

The Forum was established to enable representatives from the regulatory and environmental assessment boards based in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon to share best practices, explore common challenges, and discuss potential solutions.

Diavik - Amendment - TSS - Meeting on July 26, 2016

 The Board will convene a teleconference and face to face meeting in Yellowknife on July 26th (the Meeting) to discuss the concerns expressed about the TSS limits and sampling requirements by DDMI in its May 27th correspondence to the Minister if ENR. The Meeting will be held in the Greenstone Building, 2nd floor Boardroom, from 1:00-5:00pm MST.

The Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board would like to welcome Tom Bradbury as a Regulatory Specialist. Tom brings with him a wealth of experience ranging from a regulator with the Sahtu Land and Water Board in Fort Good Hope, a Water Resource Inspector with the federal government in Norman Wells, to a permitting coordinator at the Snap Lake Mine. We look forward to Tom being part of the Wek’èezhìi team!

Diavik Amendment Public Hearing - February 12, 2016

The Public Hearing for the application to amend Part H, Item 31 of Diavik's Water Licence W2015L2-0001 will be on February 12, 2016 from 8:30 am - 5:00pm at the Tree of Peace in Yellowknife.

Welcome Anneli Jokela!

The Wek'eezhii Land and Water Board would like to welcome Ms. Anneli Jokela to the team! Anneli has a PhD in Ecology and has previously worked with ERM-Rescan as an aquatic biologist here in Yellowknife. She will certainly be a great asset to our team and we look forward to her jumping into the deep end with our busy schedule for the year ahead.

The Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board would like to thank Tracella Romie for all her hard work at the office. Tracella helped us out for 7 weeks through SideDoor’s Youth Employment Pilot Project (YEPP). Masi, and best of luck in your future endeavours!

Diavik Renewal Public Hearing - Thank you for participating!

Masi Cho, Brett Wheler!

The Wek’eezhii Land and Water Board would like to thank Brett Wheler for all his hard work and leadership during the last five years. In his time with the Board, Brett served as a Regulatory Specialist and then stepped into the Acting Executive Director role, providing guidance and exemplifying what co-management is all about. We wish Brett all the best in his new position at the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board! 

NWT Supreme Court's Injunction Decision

The Land and Water Boards have received the NWT Supreme Court’s injunction decision, halting the implementation of a restructured land and water Board in the Mackenzie Valley. The LWB’s will continue to operate in accordance with the existing legislation. Staff remain in place in all existing Board locations, and clients will see no interruption to proceedings as a result of the ruling.

Check out Mason Mantla's Gamètì Fish Camp Film!

The Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board would like to acknowledge and congratulate Mason Mantla, one of our own Board members, in producing an inspiring short film on last year’s Gamètì fish camp! The fish camp brings together elders, youth, and scientists in sharing scientific and traditional knowledge to help monitor the health of fish and fish habitat near Tłı̨chǫ communities. WLWB Recipient of Award for Excellence in Water Stewardship

September 3, 2014 Update! Hon. J. Michael Miltenberger, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, with Board and staff at the office to present the Excellence in Water Stewardship Award for the NWT.

On March 21, 2014, Premier Bob McLeod announced that the Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board (WLWB) is the recipient of the 2014 Council of the Federation (COF) Excellence in Water Stewardship Award for the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Welcome Elissa Berrill!

The Wek’èezhìi Land and Water Board is excited to welcome Ms. Elissa Berrill to our regulatory team! Elissa studied environmental management in Sweden and recently worked in Vancouver for a Forester and Natural Resource Consultant. She was nominated as the "Most Engaged International Student" and looks forward learning more about the unique and inspiring regulatory dynamics of the north.

Mark has been with the WLWB since 2007, serving as Executive Director since 2010. Best wishes to Mark as he takes on his new role as Executive Director at the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board. The WLWB looks forward to collaborating with Mark in the future!
