The Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board (Review Board) and the Gwich’in Land and Water Board are hiring for the position of Community Liaison based in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
Job description:
Reporting to the Manager of Indigenous Outreach, Engagement & Partnership, the Community Liaison provides information and education services to communities and community members about the importance and impact of environmental assessment and regulatory activities in the Mackenzie Valley. The Community Liaison:
- reaches out to people in the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA) to share how they can effectively participate in environmental impact assessment (EIA) (to minimize harm to the environment before, during and after a project) and regulatory process
- raises community awareness and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Co- management Boards by producing plain language communication materials, workshops, and presentations;
- advises the manager and supports the team on how best to ensure the meaningful participation of communities in EIA and regulatory activities and
advises and supports the team to design processes and procedures that respectfully seek out and consider Traditional Knowledge in Board proceedings and decisions.
Requirements and qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position should have a genuine passion for community engagement. A strong desire to share information, learn and empower community members to have their voices heard. They should possess excellent communication skills and be able to effectively convey the importance of community input in projects conducted within the GSA. The candidate should be respectful, empathetic, and able to build strong and long-lasting relationships with the communities. They should also be skilled in gathering and presenting feedback to support the decision-making processes. Overall, the ideal candidate should be committed to fostering positive and impactful relationships between the communities and the Co-management boards.
